None of Arthur Peppercorn's powerful A1 Class Pacifics were saved for preservation, the last example being withdrawn from BR in 1966. The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust launched a scheme to create a brand-new example in 1990, with construction carried out at the group's Darlington base.

Completed in 2008, 'Tornado' ran a series of tests at the Great Central Railway, Loughborough whilst in grey undercoat. It was granted a main line certificate in January 2009 and has been a regular performer on charters since, wearing a variety of BR steam-era liveries. In 2017, 'Tornado' became the first steam locomotive to reach 100mph for over 50 years.
