Information

The MDO was the original version of the BR 21-ton capacity, double-door mineral wagon, built between 1950 and 1952. There were 1,000 of these steel-bodied wagons of rivetted construction, followed by 1,500 that were fully-welded.

They were unfitted, meaning they lacked the continuous vacuum brake, so started to be phased out of service during the mid-1980s, though later MDV and MDW versions operated until around 1992. The MDOs last duties were on coal workings between the South Wales collieries and docks.
